Headed to Tybee Island this spring or summer? Take advantage of all the free or inexpensive ways to enjoy a beach vacation during your Tybee stay

First up, our rental properties include first-class amenities such as the beautiful, heated Southern Belle pool located at 19 Silver Ave. The pool is open through Oct. 31, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.

Most also offer decks and patios, and the four-bedroom Mojito Manor even has a rooftop deck to enjoy outdoor entertaining. Cook up burgers on the grill to take advantage of property perks.

Of course, you’re there for the beach so spend plenty of time there. The possibilities are endless. Splash in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Go skimboarding or body surfing. Check out the tidal pools or go beach combing to see what the tide washed in.

Build a sand castle. You only need a plastic bucket and shovel, and even plastic cups and plastic spoons will work.

Make use of those ocean breezes by flying a kite. Most of the local beach gear shops and dollar stores sell kites. A colorful kite, including string and a hand grip, costs less than $15.

Go fishing. Anyone 16 and over needs a Georgia fishing license. A one-day license is $10 for a nonresident and $3.50 for each additional day. Cast a line at Lazaretto Creek Pier, the Fisherman’s Walk at Back River Beach, and the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion. It’s free to fish, so all you need is a rod and reel, and swoop net.

Go crabbing. Take a line, raw chicken meat (buy the throwaway parts), and a net and catch crabs from a pier or jetty. It’s a fun activity for kids and adults.

Take a bike ride. If you bring the bikes, you’re all set. If not, rent from Tim’s Beach Gear, which includes free pickup and delivery. As a three-mile island, Tybee is easy to get around on two wheels. Watch for bike route signs that take riders to less busy residential roads.

Pick up fresh produce at the weekly Tybee Island Farmers Market, held from 4-7 p.m. each Monday at the Tybee Island Lighthouse.

Watch for free events. Tybee Yoga holds beach classes on Wednesday and Friday mornings through November. Bring a beach towel or blanket, water, sunscreen, and sunglasses. The classes are pay-what-you-can.

Make the most of your visit by taking part in a free festival or other event. On May 17, the Tybee Beach Bum Parade rolls along Butler Avenue. On the Fourth of July, watch the free fireworks show from the Tybee Pier and Pavilion.

Throw a blanket or beach towels on the sand at Back River Beach to watch a stunning sunset.
