Tybee Island has four distinct beaches that offer more than three miles of surf and sand for a quiet, relaxing vacation. Then there’s Little Tybee Island, which is twice the size of Tybee and only reachable by boat that offers even more distance.
North Beach is perhaps the quietest of Tybee’s beaches, encompassing a portion of Highway 80 to 2nd Avenue. It takes up a large part of the island and boasts a wide range of historical attractions, eateries, funky shops, and, of course, sandy beaches. The area also provides a variety of water adventures, from deep-sea fishing to fast airboat rides.
Mid Beach draws from the quiet attraction of North Beach and the iconic action of South Beach to create an atmosphere attractive to any traveler. Follow Highway 80 to just south of Lovell Avenue, and you’ll arrive at this centrally located beach neighborhood. The beach provides an excellent spot to stand up paddleboard or sunbathe while watching the waves roll in.
Tucked away at the end of Highway 80, Back River Beach is the island’s “secret beach.” This vast stretch of sand offers gentle rolling waves, dolphin sightings, and show-stopping sunsets. Tybee’s Back River provides the perfect setting to sit back, relax, and enjoy the view for those looking to escape the crowds.
South Beach is a busier area with a vibrant shopping and dining district along Tybrisa Street. But, it’s also the sight of the Tybee Island Pier and Tybrisa Pavilion, which is free and open to the public. Take a solitary walk out on the pier for coastal distancing with a spectacular view.
