At the northwest end of Tybee Island is an interesting piece of history and popular sightseeing attraction. The Cockspur Island Lighthouse has been apart of the South's history for over 200 years and continues to play a vital part in the region.

Location

The Cockspur Island Lighthouse in on a small islet located off the southeast tip of Cockspur Island. Situated in the South Channel of the Savannah River, approximately 12 miles east of the Savannah Port, the islet is comprised of marsh grass and oyster shells that are left behind by the high tides.

A Bit of a Challenge

A majority of Cockspur Island is within the boundaries of Georgia's famed Fort Pulaski. Once a vital part of America's national defense, the fort is now a tourist attraction and museum. Many visitors would like to visit the Cockspur Island Lighthouse, but due to its location, getting to the site is a bit of a challenge. Surrounding the islet is four feet of ocean water with swift currents, making it inadvisable to cross on foot or swim. The best way to reach the islet is by a small boat or kayak.

History

Cockspur Island, or Long Island as some people call it, has been an important piece of real estate for the nation's defense, and for hundreds of years its ownership has traded hands many times. The construction of the first landmark piece, called a daymark, took place between the years of 1837-1839. This first structure was not lit, but merely painted to provide guidance for ships approaching the Georgia coastline. In 1848, the famed New York architect, Mr. John Norris, was contracted to oversee the construction of the island's first lighthouse. This structure would shine brightly to be a beacon to mariners approaching the island. Tragedy struck in 1854 when the lighthouse was destroyed by a hurricane. In just a year the second was constructed to replace it. In 1855 the tower was rebuilt as well as enlarged on the same original foundation.
